Discover our Aboriginal & Torres Strait Island cultures on a Timeless Experience
Queensland’s Cairns & Great Barrier Reef region is home to Australia’s highest proportion of Indigenous Australians and its greatest diversity of Indigenous cultures. This culture has survived more than 40,000 years and can still be experienced today.
Small groups can do personal tours with local Aboriginal elders who share their knowledge of the unique environment that is home to their people, their Dreamtime stories and family experiences. Tours can take you to ancient rock art sites, the World Heritage-listed rainforest, wild rivers tumbling over giant boulders and the mountain ranges surrounding the Cairns & Great Barrier Reef region.
Learn traditional painting techniques decorating a boomerang or a story stone with an Aboriginal artist or weave palm frond baskets with a Torres Strait Islander and take the opportunity to chat with them about their culture. Bush tucker walks also give an intimate insight into Indigenous culture and how these ancient people used the rainforest for shelter, medicine and as a food source.
